DeLorean Unveils a DMC-12-Inspired EV Supercar That Does 0-60 In 2.99 Seconds

Back in April, revived auto marque DeLorean Motor Company unveiled a teaser image of its forthcoming all-electric halo car, and though the modern EV take on the DMC-12 is still slated to make its public debut at the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance during Monterey Car Week later this August, the Texas-based startup has opted to pull the cover off of its inaugural offering several months early.

Christened the Alpha5 — or the “AlphaV” — this electrified DMC car retains its early ‘80s predecessor’s gull-wing doors, though they now open to reveal a four-seat configuration. The interior also sports race-style seats, a central digital display, and a separate digital driver’s display set behind a flat-bottom steering wheel (no flux capacitor onboard, as far as we can tell). Inspired by the original DMC-12 with its rear window louvers, the Alpha5 also boasts a sleek set of bodywork that packs an ultra-slippery 0.23 drag coefficient.

Specs and performance figures for the final production model have yet to be revealed, though DMC has given us estimated figures that look very promising. This includes a 100+ kWh battery pack that affords the American-made EV a range of 300 miles or more. The electric motor configuration also enables the Alpha5 to offer a 0-60mph time of only 2.99 seconds — and a 0-88mph time of 4.35 for all you Back to the Future fans. The Alpha5 also features a top speed of 155mph — though we assume this is an electronically-limited figure.

While pricing and final specs have yet to be revealed, the DeLorean Motor Company Alpha5 can be reserved now on the company’s website. DMC will also be producing a limited run of Alpha5 Launch Edition cars that retain the base model’s specs but come adorned in a deep red livery.
