Some concept cars are meant to be forgotten — wild flights of fancy that serve their purpose on the show stand and then quietly disappear into history. Others, like Lamborghini’s 1998 Pregunta, become legends precisely because they pushed boundaries at exactly the right moment. This carbon-fiber anomaly is about to test just how much collectors value automotive audacity when it crosses the auction block at Broad Arrow’s Zoute Concours event on October 10.

The Last of Its Kind
The Pregunta holds a unique position in Lamborghini’s timeline, considered the final concept built on a pure Lamborghini platform before Volkswagen Group’s influence began reshaping the brand’s DNA. Commissioned under Chrysler’s ownership but debuting just months after Audi took control, this Diablo-based one-off represents the end of an era. French coachbuilder Heuliez handled the bodywork, with designer Marc Deschamps (protégé of Marcello Gandini himself) taking visual cues from the Dassault Rafale fighter jet.
The aeronautical inspiration isn’t subtle. Everything from the wraparound canopy windshield to the matte grey paint mirrors the French fighter, while those twin exhaust pipes jutting from the rear could pass for afterburners. Carbon fiber construction was still relatively exotic in 1998, making the Pregunta’s extensive use of the material forward-thinking rather than just trendy.

Fighter Cockpit Meets Italian V12
Inside, the aviation theme continues with Azure Blue Alcantara seats separated by a curved central wall, fiber-optic lighting, and digital displays lifted from Formula 1. Cameras replaced traditional side mirrors — a tech feature that wouldn’t become mainstream for another two decades. The Magneti Marelli digital instrument cluster provided essential telemetry, while an Alpine audio system handled entertainment duties.
Under the radical bodywork sits a reworked Diablo platform, though Heuliez converted the all-wheel-drive system to rear-wheel drive only. The 5.7-liter V12 produces 530hp and 446lb.ft of torque, channeled through a five-speed manual gearbox. Performance figures include a 3.9-second 0-60 sprint and a 209mph top speed.

From Museum to Market
After its Paris Motor Show debut, the Pregunta spent years touring exhibitions under Heuliez ownership before landing with a private collector in 2008. Lamborghini’s heritage division serviced the car in 2021, earning it official Polo Storico certification and a stint on display at the Museo Lamborghini.
