The 80-Series occupies rare air in Land Cruiser lore. It was the generation that helped take the nameplate upmarket with leather and creature comforts. But, it stubbornly held onto solid axles and factory lockers while the rest of the SUV world went soft.
Toyota pulled it from the American market after 1997, celebrating four decades of stateside Land Cruisers with a commemorative farewell trim. And now that exact send-off spec is crossing the block in the form of this modified 1997 Toyota Land Cruiser FZJ80 40th Anniversary.

Forty Years of Stateside Service
The milestone in question traces back to October of 1957, when the Land Cruiser helped launch Toyota’s US operations as one of the very first vehicles the brand ever sold here. Forty years later, with the 80-Series bowing out, Toyota cooked up the 40th Anniversary Edition as a proper goodbye, complete with commemorative fender decals and two-tone leather.

This example carries factory locking differentials at the front, center, and rear. Triple-locked 80s were an option box most original buyers skipped, and the spec has since become the dividing line between merely nice examples and the ones enthusiasts fight over.

The Full Expedition Treatment
Whoever built this one definitely understood the assignment. An Old Man Emu lift with Nitrocharger shocks and an upgraded steering stabilizer raises the stance. Meanwhile, a set of black 17-inch MEO alloys wrapped in 35-inch Toyo Open Country rubber help handle the dirty work. A matching spare rides on the swing-out rear carrier.

The armor is equally serious. Up front sits an ARB bumper with an integrated brush guard, a Warn winch, and Rigid LED auxiliary lights, while the MEO rear bumper adds a jerry can rack and a receiver hitch. There’s even an ARB onboard air compressor under the hood for airing back up once the trail spits you out.

An Honest Workhorse Underneath
Inside, things stay period correct. The power front seats have been retrimmed in Tan and Oak Katzkin leather, joined by automatic climate control and the original CD/cassette head unit. Power-retractable running boards make the climb aboard less of an event.

This bad boy is still powered the venerable 4.5-liter 1FZ-FE inline-six, factory rated at 212 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque. It’s also paired with a four-speed automatic and a dual-range transfer case. The odometer reads 196k miles, so no, this isn’t a preserved museum piece. It’s a rig that was properly equipped and actually driven.
