Despite its reputation for being a luxury brand, BMW has a respectable racing history. The German auto giant introduced the 3.0 CSL homologation special in 1972, which went to collect notable victories in the European Touring Car Championship, German Touring Car, and FIA Group 5 events. While the car was famous for its excellence on the track, its distinct and extravagant homologation aero kit immortalized the car for making it look like the Batmobile. The limited-edition cars have been admired by collectors for decades, and we’re excited to announce that one of the 57 series two Batmobiles is going up for auction at RM Sotheby’s.
This 1975 3.0 CSL Batman is so interesting because it has so many hallmark BMW design features despite looking almost nothing like your typical Bimmer. This particular “Batmobile” features a factory-correct Taiga Metallic exterior over a black leather interior, making it one of only four to feature such a finish. Its homologation aero kit gives this CSL a very 1970s boxy look, yet its BMW design elements elevate the car’s aesthetic in such a way that its bright green exterior actually looks tasteful. This sophistication translates well into the interior of the car which, while minimalistic, is in superb condition. The car’s brown accents provide a wonderful layer of visual and textural contrast to the black leather.
Under the hood, this 3.0 CSL still retains many of its original features. Its numbers-matching 3.2L straight-six engine still provides power, it still has power steering, and it still has its homologation aero kit as well as its original aluminum doors and hood. However, while factory-correct, its 14-inch Alpina wheels aren’t original and it still needs center support installed to its rear wing.
Aside from a few minor details that have been updated due to Father Time’s meddling, this 1975 3.0 CSL Batman is in fantastic condition and still retains many of its rare features. It is going up for auction at RM Sotheby’s Amelia Island sale on March 5th, where it’s expected to sell for at least $325,000.
