After dominating the World Sportscar Championship for much of the 1950s and ‘60s with its prototypes, Ferrari decided to make an affordable V6 version of its high-performance cars for availability to the masses. Named after Enzo Ferrari’s son, the Dino marque 206 GT came out in 1967, and eventually gave way to the 246 GT and GTS in ‘69. Up for auction soon on RM Sotheby’s is a pristine 1973 Ferrari Dino 246 GTS.
Dubbed the “Chairs and Flares” due to its Daytona-style seats and wide wheel arches, this highly-coveted Dino 246 GTS features the removable Targa top of standard Spyder models and is one of 50 examples to be finished in the burgundy factory shade Rosso Cordoba. Produced at the Scaglietti plant, the car was built to U.S. specifications with power windows and air conditioning, and it was placed upon magnesium Campagnolo wheels. In the ‘80s, the 2.4L engine was polished and performance-tuned.
At the time of sale, the odometer displays less than 39,000 miles, with less than 7,000 tacked on since 1989. Where its first few owners were California-based, the car returned to Europe in the mid-’90s, eventually to be owned by French model and actress Laetitia Casta between 2006 and 2017, although she likely never drove it — at least not legally — as she had no license.
Mostly in its original stock configuration, this ‘73 Ferrari Dino 246 GTS is a sight to behold. The burgundy outer coat is complemented with an interior that includes twin beige leather seats with black stripes. There is no reserve on the car and it is scheduled to go under the hammer as part of RM Sotheby’s Grimaldi Forum auction in Monaco on May 14.
