It’s hard to think of a car that’s more American than the classic Ford Mustang. Since its inception in 1964, the original pony car has epitomized classic American muscle cars at their zenith. Ford upped the ante in 1967 by introducing the Mustang Shelby GT500KR, which sported enhanced performance capabilities and a more aggressive body. While the Mustang Shelby GT500KR captured the hearts and minds of millions of car lovers, the 1968 “King of the Road” fastback models were a particular favorite variant of the model, despite their limited production run. Now, one of the only 1,053 in existence is up for auction on Bring a Trailer.
This glorious 1968 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500KR is the result of a multi-year refurbishment, meaning it’s running in excellent shape. It features a rebuilt 428ci Cobra Jet V8 paired with a three-speed automatic transmission, with an output of 335HP and 440lb-ft of torque. The car’s engine was rebuilt in September 2005 by Malden Machine and features cast aluminum valve covers with “Cobra Le Mans” lettering and is fed by a four-barrel carburetor. For its exterior, the refurbishment process saw the car stripped to its bare metal before being refinished in its factory Highland Green paint color. Additional exterior design elements include a fiberglass hood with a functional ram-air scoop, a rear spoiler, sequential taillights, grille-mounted Lucas fog lights, and air scoops on the sail panels. Furthermore, this 1968 ‘Stang features a Cobra Jet fuel cap and fender badges, as well as white rocker panel stripes with the iconic GT500KR lettering.
On the inside, its cabin features front bucket seats, as well as a sport deck rear seat trimmed in black vinyl with Comfortweave inserts. Moreover, when refurbishing the car, the Interior Décor Group added woodgrain trim to the dashboard, center console, and door panels, which contrast beautifully with the black vinyl trim. The car’s odometer shows under 64,000 miles, and as of this writing, the current bid on Bring a Trailer is $130,000 with 8 days remaining.
