Vintage Ferraris have long been some of the most valuable and sought-after cars on the planet — race-used examples even more so. With the right pedigree, condition, and history, certain specimens can go for tens of millions of dollars, and such is the case with a 1962 Ferrari 330 LM / 250 GTO by Scaglietti which just took in a record-breaking sum at auction.

Widely recognized as being the Holy Grail of Ferraris, this 1962 specimen is one of only 36 examples to ever leave the factory. Sporting chassis number 3765, the car wears a classic Corso Rossa livery complemented via #7 black-on-white roundels adorning the hood and doors. Inside, the Ferrari features a period-correct interior trimmed in blue. Powered by a Colombo V-12 engine, the car spent the last forty-odd years being privately owned — including at one point, by a chairman of the Ferrari Club of America.

The only GTO Tipo 1962 ever to be raced by the Scuderia Ferrari squad, the 330 LM / 250 GTO was campaigned in a slew of high-profile events including the 1962 24 Hours of Le Mans, the 1965 Sicilian Hillclimb Championship, and the 1962 Nürburgring 1000, just to name a few. After achieving ample success in competition, this vehicle would spend its more recent years amassing a myriad of prestigious awards at various Concours events. It’s also been featured in several magazines for what should be very obvious reasons. Between its race history and the fact that it’s in concours condition ultimately allowed the car to bring in a whopping $51,705,000 when it took its turn crossing the auction block last week. This makes it the most expensive Ferrari ever sold at auction — and the second most valuable car ever sold at auction, period.

This 1962 Ferrari 330 LM / 250 GTO by Scaglietti recently crossed the auction block at RM Sotheby’s recent New York sale where it brought in a cool $51,705,000. Interestingly, the car was expected to fetch an even greater sum of $60,000,000 — though we’re sure that record will eventually be beat within the next few years anyway.
