Airstream’s Lightweight World Traveler Trailer Makes Towing Less Intimidating

It can be intimidating towing anything for your first time. Even with its iconic aluminum frames, Airstream’s towable trailers can still get upwards of two tons in dry weight. That’s exactly why they made their World Traveler line, debuting with the 22-foot 22RB, so that even beginner RV enthusiasts can have a more hassle-free experience.

HERITAGE IN A NARROW BODY

Airstream’s legacy is well documented. The Ohio-based camper brand has been crafting riveted aluminum trailers since 1931, when founder Wally Byam built his first homemade unit on a Model T chassis. Through the Depression, World War II aluminum shortages, and nearly a century of ownership changes, they’re the sole survivor of that era still making trailers today. The World Traveler 22RB borrows its narrow 7.5-foot width from Airstream’s European and Asian models where tighter roads demand a slimmer profile.

At 3,700lbs base weight and a 4,500-pound GVWR fully loaded, the 22RB can be hauled by mid-sized SUVs and crossovers. The relocated air conditioner now sits under the curbside bed rather than on the roof, keeping that signature streamlined silhouette intact.

SCANDINAVIAN MINIMALISM MEETS AIRSTREAM Ethos

Inside, Airstream went full minimalist with white aluminum walls and light laminate cabinetry. The dual-pane acrylic windows feature an integrated screen-and-blind system that operates independently. You pull the screen down for airflow, the blind up for privacy, or separate both entirely. It’s a small detail but one you won’t find elsewhere in Airstream’s lineup.

The rear V-shaped twin bed configuration creates extra movement space and under-bed storage while still sleeping two comfortably. Up front, the convertible dinette transforms from dining setup to deep-seat sofa to secondary sleeping area. The three-piece dry bath keeps shower and toilet separate, and the galley kitchen packs a two-burner gas cooktop, 3.1 cubic-foot fridge, and ample counter space.

Standard tech includes a 24-inch smart TV, JBL stereo with Bluetooth, ducted air conditioning with heat pump, and a Truma Combi furnace-water heater combo. However, you get optional upgrades as well, including a 300W solar charging system with a 2.5kWh lithium battery package for longer boondocking, microwave, backup camera, under-seat powered cooler, and bedding kits designed for the unique V-shaped bed configuration.
