There are great towable trailers, and then there are Airstream trailers. The Ohio-based RV juggernaut has long stood as the standard-bearer for making excellent trailers, as its iconic aluminum caravans are a perennial favorite for both outdoor enthusiasts and design nerds. As the world continues to embrace the ever-growing electrified paradigm shift, companies throughout the RV and automotive spaces are finding groundbreaking ways to create fully-electric models of their products while also improving on their technological and performance capabilities. Following suit, Airstream has unveiled a new, electric trailer concept that is sure to make an impact in the space.

At first glance, the eStream looks to be your standard Airstream trailer, right down to the familiar gleaming silver exterior. However, one look inside and at its technical specs will convince you that this is indeed the next step in the evolution of the iconic trailer brand. The eStream concept is built on parent company Thor Industries’ high-voltage electric chassis, which employs self-propelling technology via an electric drivetrain made up of independent motors and high capacity lithium-ion batteries. With the trailer able to accelerate on its own, it effectively lightens its load, resulting in improved gas mileage of the vehicle tasked with hauling it. Moreover, its streamlined design is shown to reduce drag while towing.

Arguably the coolest innovation of the eStream is that you can actually control the trailer on your phone. That’s right, the smart technology that’s integrated into the eStream empowers users to control it effortlessly on a smart device, meaning you can hitch or unhitch to your vehicle and move your trailer around remotely. The trailer also features high-capacity batteries that accurately monitor the power levels of your batteries down to the mile, along with Amazon Alexa integration in the interior for a voice-controlled living space.

Add to this already stacked line-up of innovations the eStream’s built-in rooftop solar panels that generate power, and you have the future of towable trailers. It also features an easy-to-use digital interface for its systems, which only adds to the usability of this already killer concept. Airstream has yet to announce when the eStream concept will be produced, but it has the potential to revolutionize the trailer camping experience.
