After more than 50 years of heritage, Nissan’s flagship sports car continues to evolve. The seventh-generation Z debuted just three years ago but the Japanese automaker has already delivered a mid-cycle refresh at the 2026 Tokyo Auto Salon that finally gives us something we never had: a manual transmission option for the high-performance Nismo variant.

A Lineage Worth Preserving
The Fairlady Z nameplate can be traced back to 1969, when Nissan introduced a long-hood fastback that combined European roadster styling with Japanese reliability. The original S30 sold over 520,000 units, giving you the chance to own a sports car that didn’t cost six figures. Through seven generations spanning 1.7 million sales, the Z maintains that same ethos even with twin-turbo V6 power and modern chassis tech.

Refined Aerodynamics and Heritage Styling
For the new refresh, the updated front fascia replaces the oversized grille with a cleaner two-piece design. Slim horizontal slats up top and larger lower opening below are separated by a body-colored bar. Nissan claims the revised aerodynamics cut front lift by 3.3% and drag by 1%. The body is otherwise carried over unchanged except for the deleted rear lip spoiler. It debuts with a striking Unryu Green paint option inspired by the S30’s Grand Prix Green, alongside redesigned 10-spoke black wheels.

The Manual Finally Arrives
Like we said, the Nismo now offers a six-speed manual transmission. This addition arrives alongside retuned ECU, ignition, and throttle mapping to sharpen engine response. The 3.0-liter twin-turbo VR30DDTT V6 continues delivering 420hp in Nismo spec (400 hp in standard trim), sending power to the rear wheels through either the new manual or the carryover nine-speed automatic.
Underneath, Nissan fitted new monotube shock absorbers with larger-diameter pistons across the range to improve ride quality. The Nismo receives further suspension refinement plus stronger brakes derived from the R35 GT-R. Inside, updates remain minimal, while a new tan leather option joins the lineup.
