The Nissan Frontier Pro-4X Just Got Transformed Into the Ultimate Overlander

Nissan’s quiet comeback campaign has been picking up steam for a while now. Between the teased Skyline return and the long-rumored Xterra revival, the brand’s clearly trying to claw its way back into enthusiast conversation. So it’s a little funny that the loudest endorsement of the year isn’t coming from Nissan at all.

It’s coming from Overland Expo, which just crowned the 2026 Frontier Pro-4X its sixth annual Ultimate Overland Vehicle Build. And yes, this is the first time a Nissan has gotten the call.

Why the Frontier, Why Now

Past Ultimate Builds have leaned on the usual suspects: Toyota 4Runner, Lexus LX, GMC Canyon and Sierra AT4X variants. So the Frontier crashing the party is most certainly a change of pace.

The reasoning checks out, too. The Pro-4X is one of the last mid-size trucks still running a naturally aspirated V6, which counts for something out in the middle of nowhere. Less to break, fewer turbos to baby, and a parts catalog that any small-town shop can navigate. Simplicity is definitely a feature when you’re 200 miles from the nearest dealer.

The Build Itself

Overland Expo started with a crew cab, short-bed Pro-4X in Afterburn Orange, which is honestly the only acceptable color for a truck like this. From there, 28 partner brands chipped in to turn an already-capable factory off-roader into this trail-ready beast.

The factory Bilsteins got swapped for Fox coilovers and piggyback shocks, paired with an ADO TitanSwap kit that mimics a long-travel setup for better off-roading. Black Rhino wheels wrapped in Nokian Outpost tires sit underneath, while NISMO rock sliders handle underbody protection and a ComeUp winch lives up front for when things go sideways. A raised Borla cat-back exhaust adds some extra clearance (and presumably some bark), and Diode Dynamics handle the lighting situation front-to-back.

Living Out of the Bed

The Tune Outdoor M1L pop-up camper is the cherry on top. It tips the scales at just 322 pounds, which is pretty impressive for a unit this functional.

Round it out with RotopaX water and fuel cans, a Rixen’s onboard shower, a Battle Born battery and REDARC charging setup, an electric fridge, a Breeo firepit, and a Jetboil, and you’ve got a self-contained basecamp that fits inside a mid-size bed. All with no trailer required.
