Ford’s Mustang Dark Horse SC Is Here, and It’s Packing a Hand-Built 795HP V8

Back in January, Ford unveiled the Supercharged (SC) version of its Mustang Dark Horse, but we could only speculate just how powerful it would be. Slotted right under the Mustang GTD, the recent Dark Horse SC announcement from the marque confirmed our suspicions that it would deliver 795hp, and, most importantly, revive the supercharged Mustang spirit after the Shelby GT500 era ended a few years ago.

The Ghost of GT500

To understand why this release carries so much weight, you have to go back a few years. When the GT500 departed, it left behind a legitimacy gap in the Mustang lineup. You had the capable but naturally aspirated Dark Horse at 500hp, and then the 815hp GTD, a $327,000 machine assembled by Multimatic in Canada. And unlike the GT500, whose Shelby branding came with royalties paid to Shelby American, this one is entirely Ford’s own.

The Engine Room

The heart of the SC is a hand-assembled 5.2-liter supercharged Predator V8, the same family of engine shared with the GTD, built one-at-a-time by a single technician at Ford’s Dearborn Engine Plant. Pair that with a Tremec 7-speed dual-clutch and you’ve got 795hp and 660 lb-ft of torque hitting the pavement.

For the task, the SC was co-developed alongside the Mustang GTD and the Mustang GT3 race car, with testing at Sebring and Virginia International Raceway. The aerodynamic package boasts an aluminum hood with a prominent carbon fiber vent produces 2.5 times the downforce of the standard Dark Horse model when the rain tray is removed. And if you go with the upgraded Track Pack, you’ll get a carbon fiber wing that generates 620 lbs of rear downforce at 180 mph.

Track Pack Options

The standard Dark Horse SC is already a serious machine with forged aluminum wheels, six- and four-piston Brembo calipers, and the latest-generation MagneRide magnetic dampers with variable traction control. With the Track Pack, there’s carbon-ceramic Brembos, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R rubber (305/30 and 315/30 on 20-inch carbon fiber wheels), rear seat delete, and a ducktail decklid that improved rear wing efficiency by 10% without increasing wing size or angle of attack. That last detail was impressive enough that the GTD team adopted a similar design.

The Track Pack swaps the rear 2+2 seating for a storage shelf, and you get optional Recaro leather and Dinamica sport seats with Space Gray or Teal accents. The GTD’s flat-bottom, leather-wrapped steering wheel with a 12 o’clock stripe and integrated performance controls carry over, surrounded by Alcantara and carbon fiber trim.

Lastly, a Special Edition Track Pack adds 3D-printed titanium accents also carried over from the GTD program, a black-painted roof, and red interior accents.
