Citroën’s Doorless Ami Buggy Turns Their Tiny EV Into A Beach-Ready Adventure Mobile

The quirky and beloved Citroën Ami Buggy just got a bold new twist. What was previously a “cute” limited-edition open-air EV meant for off-roading is now a permanent part of the Ami lineup, and with a new colorful trim unveiled as well. Starting May 6, the doorless, roof-optional Ami Buggy graduates from novelty status to become a production vehicle in Citroën’s growing electric micromobility range.

From Concept to Cult Classic

When Citroën first unveiled the My Ami Buggy Concept back in 2021, nobody quite expected it to evolve beyond a clever design exercise. Named after the four-dour economy car produced from 1961 through 1978, this ruggedized, off-road-ready take on the original Ami showcased what was possible with this diminutive platform, sporting beefy all-terrain rubber, custom bull bars, and an eye-catching LED light bar. While the production version has been tamed somewhat (the LED roof light, bull bars, and beefy tires have all been left out), the spirit of that original concept lives on in the latest models.

After capturing the public’s imagination, Citroën dipped its toes in the water with extremely limited production runs that sold out almost instantly. The first batch of just 50 units disappeared in less than 18 minutes. But now, no longer constrained by a limited edition size, anyone can get their hands on this charming micro-EV.

No Doors, No Problem

The highlight of the Buggy is the absence of conventional doors, which have been replaced by black metal hoops mounted on hinges, “accentuating the feeling of being in contact with the outside world.” This Wrangler-inspired setup comes with optional zipped door covers for rainy weather and is combined with a retractable sunroof. It’s this doorless design that transforms the car into something that feels truly adventurous.

The whole thing leans into a kind of playful industrialism, purpose-built for impulsive trips into the wilderness or on the beach. While the non-Buggy version has already made a name for itself with symmetrical panels and quirky proportions, the Buggy adds some visual personality with its gold 14-inch steel wheels, a matte black rear spoiler that seems almost comically sporty given the vehicle’s 28mph top speed, and new yellow accents that pop against the taupe body panels.

Micromobility Made Fun

Just be clear here, the Ami Buggy isn’t going to challenge a Jeep Wrangler or Ford Bronco for off-road performance. The EV inherits the redesigned front and rear ends of the regular Ami with round lighting units and the decorative 2CV-style side gills. But despite its rugged appearance, the Buggy doesn’t get any performance or chassis upgrades over the standard Ami.

What it does deliver, however, is uncomplicated fun. Still ultra-compact (just under 8ft long) and fully electric, the Ami Buggy builds on what’s made the original a micromobility legend in just half a decade. On the other hand, you only get a 46.6-mile range, a 28mph top speed, and a full charge in a sluggish four hours from a standard 220V outlet.

For those wanting even more style, there’s the flagship trim called Ami Buggy Palmeira. This version adds black and yellow decals on the wheel arches and greenhouse, matching the yellow double-chevron emblems. Yellow accents continue inside the cabin, including the three storage boxes, a bag hook, floor mats, door nets, and a smartphone holder. What’s more, buyers of the Palmeira get “Andy,” a little robot figurine with a bouncing head mounted on the dashboard that bobs along as you drive.
