Back in July of last year, Maserati announced that it was working on a limited edition track-only version of its current MC20 flagship supercar known as Project24. And while little was known about this carbon-bodied track weapon, the Trident marque has now finally pulled the cover off of the completed vehicle with what’s now being called the Maserati MCXtrema.
Short for Maserati Corse EXtrema,” the MCEtrema has been reconfigured from the ground up for closed-circuit-only-use, gaining a host of noteworthy upgrades over the already immesnely-capable normal MC20 supercar. Constructed around a feather-light central carbon-fiber monocoque, the vehicle also benefits from new double-wishbone suspension geometry and kinematics and racing dampers, springs and an antiroll bar that are all fully adjustable.Paired with a six-speed race-spec sequential gearbox, the MCExtrema is powered by a specially-tuned version of Maserati’s Nettuno V6 engine with new turbochargers that now see the 3.0-liter six-banger make 730hp and 538.4ft-lbs —an improvement of around 100 horses over the non-MCE-spec. Boasting a dry weight of only 2,866lbs, the entire vehicle archives a power-to-weight-ratio of 1.8kg/CV.
Additionally, the track-only Maserati has also received a set of race wheels fitted with carbon fiber racing brakes, a fully-enclosed carbon fiber underfloor, an FIA-approved integrated safety roof hatch, polycarbonate windshield and side windows, and a full suite of carbon bodywork with an aero kit that includes an adjustable rear wing, and a trident-shaped front bonnet set above an aggressive front splitter. Built to FIA requirements, the cabin of the MCExtrema comes loaded with a fixed racing bucket seat with four-point mounting and a six-point racing safety harness, plus an adjustable racing pedal box, and a carbon-fiber multifunction steering wheel with integrated display that’s mounted on an adjustable steering column.
While pricing has yet to be revealed, the Maserati MCXtrema will be limited to only 62 units worldwide.
