Airstream Just Dropped Two Solar-Equipped Off-Road Camper Models

Nearly 100 years ago, Airstream began in Wally Byam’s Los Angeles backyard where he would make wooden camping trailers and sell how-to kits for customers to make their own. It was less than a decade later that Byam shifted to the iconic aluminum models the brand would become synonymous with. Today, Airstream is still going strong despite yet another downturn in the camper industry following a peak a few years back. Today, it introduces two new off-grid models in the form of a sprinter van and a large camper trailer.

Few brands evoke nostalgia for the open road like Airstream’s aluminum trailers, and this first model being unveiled is among the brand’s most luxurious yet. A 25-foot tow-in camper fitting somewhere between Airstream’s International and Globetrotter models, the Trade Wind can go off the grid, sustained by 600W of solar capacity, with its rooftop panels charging up an 810Ah battery. Tapping tech developed for the brand’s eStream Travel Trailer Concept last year, the Trade Wind features the largest battery bank, the most solar potential, and the largest inverter (a 3,000W system) ever seen in an Airstream.

Sleeping up to five, the trailer comes with a flexible floor plan that includes a bathroom, shower, and full kitchen inside, while the large sleeping area can be arranged to your liking. What’s more, the battery pack can power the air conditioning unit and microwave at the same time without any shore power. In terms of driving, the Trade Wind features a 3-inch suspension lift kit, off-road tires, front rock guards, and solar window shields.

You can begin purchasing the Trade Wind from Airstream dealers for an MSRP of $129,400.

The second model being introduced today is the Interstate 19X. While the Trade Wind is a brand new tier in Airstream’s range, the Interstate 19X is an off-roading take on the Interstate 19 (no X). Based on a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis, the 19X is a 19-foot Class B camper van made for more nimble driving than a larger towed trailer.

With 4×4 capability and an all-wheel drive upgrade option, the 19X sleeps up to 2 adults and has a living area that converts into a 74” x 70” bed. The inside also features a galley, modular table system, toilet, and shower. The storage is plenty adaptable to whatever your planned activities may be on your trip. The rooftop features 250W of solar paneling to charge up your utilities. If you plan to go off the beaten path, the lower body and hood have a protective coating to combat debris and scratches.

If you’d like to get yourself the Interstate 19X, it retails for $199,940 from Airstream dealers.
