Porsche’s RS, or road sport, models first debuted back in 1973 to fulfill homologation requirements for racing, with the GT3 RS rolling out in 1999 for competing in the FIA GT3 cup. Since then, the public has benefitted from such standards, able to drive track-ready vehicles on the road. Back in July, Porsche teased its fastest GT3 car yet with the upcoming 2023 911. Today, that car is now available.
With a top speed of 184mph and a 0 to 60 acceleration of just 3 seconds, the new Porsche 911 GT3 RS boasts a 4.0L naturally-aspirated boxer 6-cylinder engine with 518hp of output (previously thought to be 500hp) and 346lb-ft of torque. Other features have been included to increase aerodynamics, such as the central radiator (as opposed to the three radiators on previous models) and the teardrop-shaped profile of the front axle, which increases downforce by about 88lbs at top speed (1,895lbs overall).
Also, for the first time ever on a production Porsche, a drag reduction system is equipped, allowing the driver to get lower drag and higher speeds when going straight, simply by pushing a button on the inside. This then flattens out the wings on the front and rear. Moreover, an airbrake function sets the wings at the optimal position to maximize drag when braking at high speeds.
While previously unclear whether or not the 2023 Porsche 911 GT3 RS would be street-legal, the German marque has declared that it, in fact, will be. You can reserve yours today on Porsche’s website for $223,800, with deliveries expected for spring 2023.
