While the release of a V6-powered Ferrari supercar was somewhat controversial upon its debut, the Modena marque has undeniably proven that its F1-derived six-cylinder platform is just as capable as many of its V12 predecessors. And now, less than a year after the debut of Ferrari’s 296 GTB — or Type F171 — the Prancing Horse has pulled the cover off of a hard-top convertible version of the 296 known as the Grand Touring Spider — or GTS.
As a drop-top version of the 296, the GTS features an electronically-retractable hardtop roof that can be raised or lowered in less than 15 seconds and done at speeds of up to 28mph. At the heart of the hybrid supercar is an F1-developed turbocharged 3.0-liter 120° V6 that’s paired with a 122-kW (164-hp) electric motor and mated to an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission — a powertrain that’s good for a collective 819hp and 545.7ft-lbs of torque.
Despite the electronically-retractable roof, the GTS weighs just 150lbs more than the Gran Turismo Berlinetta model — allowing it to retain the GTB’s 2.9-second 0-60mph time, as well as a top speed exceeding 200mph. Riding on 20” alloy wheels, the 296 GTS also gets Ferrari’s transition manager actuator and six-way chassis dynamic sensor, as well as an ABS EVO braking setup and four drive modes. Like the 296 GTB, the GTS-spec will also be available with Ferrari’s optional Assetto Fiorano Package which boasts adjustable Multimatic shock absorbers and a carbon fiber aero kit that adds an extra 22lbs of downforce.
The manufacturer has yet to reveal availability or pricing for the 2023 Ferrari 296 GTS Spider — which is the first-ever V6-powered open-top road car to wear a Prancing Horse badge — however, we expect it to carry an MSRP just north of the 296 GTB’s roughly $318,000 price tag.
