Mercedes-Benz Adds All-Wheel-Drive to the 2022 AMG SL Roadster

For a vehicle that has ultimately grown as iconic as the three-pointed star itself, it comes as no surprise that Mercedes-Benz put all its eggs in one basket when crafting the updated AMG SL. Taking a bit of the old and a dazzling amount of the new, their latest edition continues to add to the mystique of their legendary SL series.

The 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL is as new as a new car can get, with no single component being reused from the previous generation. The car sports a long wheelbase, long hood, and a sporty soft-top that is capable of opening and closing at an eye-popping speed of 15 seconds. Of course, that is far from the fastest spec the new Roadster has. With its lower center of gravity and abundance of modification options, the new SL 63 is capable of going 0-60 in 3.5 seconds with a 4.0L biturbo V8 engine that offers 577 horsepower and a maximum 590 lb.-ft. of torque, while the SL 55’s 0-60 takes a slightly slower 3.8 seconds on account of its 469 horsepower and a 516 lb.-ft. of torque-output from the same powerplant. On the historic front, for the first time in its 70-year history, the new SL also boasts all-wheel-drive, using the AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system. Its gorgeously reimagined interior garners much of its influence from the iconic 300 SL Gullwing, offering a 2+2 grand tourer layout. The electrically-adjustable AMG sports seats boast a ridiculously convenient AIRSCARF neck-high heating system, ensuring warmth on even the most frigid nights on the road. Available in a variety of color packages, the upcoming roadster’s upholstery will be customizable through Benz’s recently-announced MANUFAKTUR program.

Although there are no official pricing details or a slated market date, a glance of the 2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG-SL Roadster should be enough to hold over many en route to its official release.
