The electrification of classic cars has become increasingly popular over the last few years, however, a new automotive startup in the UK is now taking this premise to the next level with the debut of a fully-electric and fully-bespoke 1960s Ford Mustang. Headquartered out of London, the company is called Charge, and while it may be a new player in this space, its team possesses an enormous wealth of experience, with the firm’s engineers having previously worked on everything from the development of McLarens to Range Rovers to F1 cars.
Known simply as the “Electric Mustang,” Charge’s inaugural offering is based on a 1967 Ford Mustang Fastback, though the EV version shares little to no parts with the original car. Individually built by hand in London, the Electric Mustang uses an officially licensed shell, and while it maintains the iconic lines and silhouette of the ’67 Fastback, it streamlines the body design, giving the vehicle a much more modern feel. The company also makes it abundantly clear that the Electric Mustang is far more than just a restored, electrified classic car, but rather a brand-new completely redeveloped and re-engineered luxury vehicle.
As such, the car comes equipped with state-of-the-art components and a custom digital interface, as well as one seriously impressive EV powertrain. Charge’s electric motor setup generates 400kW (536hp) of peak power and an even more impressive 1,106ft-lbs of instantaneous torque — a configuration that allows for a 3.9-second 0-60mph time, partially thanks to the use of what Charge calls an “AiWD” setup. The motor is paired with a 64kWh battery pack that affords a range of 200 miles on a single charge. The interior of the Ford has also been completely reworked, and now boasts a level of craftsmanship and attention to detail that’s rivaled only by elite customs outfits like Singer.
Limited to 499 units worldwide, the 1967 Ford Mustang Fastback-based “Electric Mustang” by Charge starts at £350,000 ( ~ $458,800). Each unit will also be unique, as customers are given a host of bespoke options for both the interior and exterior of the car.
