This Zagato-Bodied 1961 Lancia Appia Sport Is Seeking a New Owner

First introduced in 1953 as the successor to the Ardea, the Lancia Appia was a popular, mass-produced Italian car that possessed an interesting mix of novel and antiquated technologies. More than 100,000 Appia specimens were built across its roughly decade-long production run, including a trio of markedly rarer Zagato-bodied versions — one of which has recently surfaced for resale at a Dutch dealership.

This 1961 Lancia Appia Sport Zagato is reportedly one of only 200 short-wheelbase examples ever produced — making an already rare car all the more noteworthy. Riding on a set of Borrani bi-metal wheels, this ’61 specimen is adorned in a polished, bare aluminum set of bodywork that remains in remarkable condition — especially for a more than 60-year-old vehicle. Like every version of the Appia, this Zagato-bodied example is powered by a 1,090cc V4 engine that was good for around 50hp. This four-cylinder engine was also mated to a synchromesh-equipped four-speed gearbox that sent power to the rear wheels via a single-piece pro-shaft and hypoid-gear differential.

While still in mostly original condition, a select number of parts on this Lancia have been treated to restoration. The interior of the car still retains its original bucket seats, as well as a wooden and metal three-spoke Nardi steering wheel, and the Lancia’s original instrumentation. Though it’s sat dormant in recent years, this example is also eligible for a variety of vintage racing events and recently participated in the Targa Florio.

This particular 1961 Lancia Appia Sport Zagato is currently for sale through Netherlands-based classic and exotics broker Very Superior Old Cars (VSOC). Pricing and additional information are available upon request.
