Even before its acquisition of Mystery Ranch in 2024, YETI had been making backpacks for quite some time …technically. Aside from its rugged coolers and drinkware, the brand’s most notable pack was the Panga, a thick-shelled bag with few compartments that was more like a cooler with straps than a traditional backpack.
Since 2024, however, YETI has dropped a couple of nice options, like the Ranchero commuter bag or the EDC-friendly Bozeman. But YETI’s proclivity is for the outdoors, and it was only a matter of time before we saw their first hiking backpack, which they’ve debuted this week as the Skala.

Mystery Ranch Construction Meets YETI Durability
The Skala lineup arrives in four capacities — 32L, 40L, 50L, and 60L — each built around the same core philosophy that made Mystery Ranch packs legendary among firefighters and military personnel. That signature RipZip opening, which Mystery Ranch founder Dana Gleason originally developed for ski touring, gives you a panoramic view of your gear without needing to dig through layers and layers of stuff. This speeds up the process of, say, getting to your first-aid kit or a jacket you packed for colder dips.
YETI wisely kept the AlumaLite frame from Mystery Ranch’s playbook too, which distributes weight across your hips and shoulders so you don’t feel the actual weight of your pack as much. The micro-adjustable harness accommodates different torso lengths, and load lifters keep the pack close to your body for a lower profile.

Built for Distance, Not Just Day Hikes
Where the Skala separates itself from YETI’s earlier attempts is in the details. The vented mesh back panel channels airflow between you and the pack, addressing one of the biggest complaints about the old Panga, which would undoubtedly give you a sweaty back after less than an hour on the trail. The weight is kept down thanks to Guardcore Nylon, which can still handle a good deal of abuse. Meanwhile, the stretch-woven hydration holsters are kept tight against the side so they stay out of the way when you don’t need them (perhaps you want to use this as a travel or commuter bag every once in a while).

The smaller 32L and 40L models are intended for shorter day hikes or overnights, while the 50L and 60L versions include separate bottom compartments perfect for sleeping bags (small sleeping bags) or dirty clothes. The internal pockets are great for your headlamp, sunglasses, or keeping camp cookware organized.

Recap
YETI Skala Hiking Backpack
YETI just dropped their first real hiking backpack, the Skala, which comes in four sizes and finally brings Mystery Ranch’s technical know-how (like that RipZip opening and proper load distribution) to YETI’s bombproof construction. Prices run from $300 to $400 depending on capacity, and it’s a massive step up from their old Panga bags that were basically coolers with straps.
