It was ten-years-ago that The James Brand debuted The Chapter knife. Not only was The Chapter its first-ever knife, but, more importantly, the frame-locking folder also introduced the world to TJB’s hallmark ability to create functional utilitarian knife and tool designs delivered in sleek, modern, and minimalist-looking packages. A decade after the release of its inaugural knife, and the boutique brand has now announced that it’s returned to the drawing board in order to deliver a new second-generation version of the blade that started it all for The James Brand.

To celebrate the release of this redesigned flagship folder, the Portland-based EDC gear purveyor has joined forces with Huckberry in order to produce the limited edition The James Brand x Huckberry Chapter 2 Pocket Knife

Chapter 2 CliffsNotes

Like its predecessor, The James Brand’s second-generation Chapter knife is constructed around a minimalistic frame-locking handle milled from grade 5 titanium. Fitted with a matching 6AL4V titanium back-spacer and mated together using black PVD-coated Torx hardware, the handle on the Chapter 2 also boasts an integrated steel lock face insert that prevents the 6AL4V titanium framelock from wearing — and practically guarantees a lifetime of use.

Public Feedback, Answered

One of the most-requested changes to TJB’s original Chapter knife was for the over-sized tip-down pocket clip to be swapped to a tip-up item. Not only has The James Brand updated the Chapter 2 with a tip-up pocket clip, but the original pressed stainless steel unit has also been jettisoned in favor of a smaller yet markedly more top-shelf tip-up pocket clip that’s been precision-machined from a solid piece of grade 5 titanium — a design with no exposed or visible hardware that appears to have been borrowed from TJB’s super-premium Barnes integral knife.

Getting To The (Drop) Point

Spanning 6.45” overall, The Chapter 2 features a 2.60” blade with an updated drop point profile that’s forged in premium CPM S35VN — an advanced USA-made powder metallurgy blade steel from Crucible Industries. Deployed via a single thumb-stud, the blade is guided by a sealed ceramic ballbearing setup been that’s tuned to perfection.

Tuned To Perfection

Having gotten an early opportunity to get hands-on with TJB’s second-gen Chapter knife prior to its public debut, I can 100% attest to the fact that the action on this thing is ridiculously smooth — making it abundantly clear that a great deal of effort went into meticulously dialing-in every element and detail on TJB’s new flagship folding knife. What’s more, the second-gen Chapter also shows off how far TJB’s craftsmanship and build quality has come over the last decade, as the overall construction and fit and finish on The Chapter 2 is top-shelf through and through.

The Huck Treatment

The James Brand’s latest collaboration with Huckberry sees The Chapter 2 bestowed with a blacked-out Cerakote-finished handle and a black PVD-coated blade contrasted via an orange-anodized thumb-stud, white James° and Huckberry branding on the blade, and a Huckberry tree logo on the handle.

Additionally, not only has The Chapter 2’s new titanium billet pocket clip been adorned in Huckberry’s signature topographical pattern, but the same topo treatment has also been subtly applied to the inner-face of the handle’s framelock mechanism. Though The James Brand did bestow The Chapter with minor revisions in 2019, the 2024 second-generation model represents a much more substantial update — and an overall better knife.
