In our industry, we see a ton of car watches (seriously, it feels like at least one a week) but not necessarily a lot of car knives. That’s why when a new one gets announced — especially from one of our favorite knifemakers — we have to talk about it.
The annual SHOT Show (Shooting, Hunting, and Outdoor Trade Show) happened recently in Las Vegas where Spyderco announced over a half-dozen new blades, including the Edgerati pocket knife, which, as you can expect, has some automotive inspiration.
What’s in a Name?
If you couldn’t tell by the on-the-nose nomenclature, the Edgerati takes its design from the Maserati — more specifically, the Maserati Tipo 60/61 (also known as the Birdcage). Made for the 1960 and 1961 model years, the Birdcage only saw 23 examples in total but remains an important vehicle in sports car history.
It featured an emblematic tubular space frame chassis with a triangular design that remains iconic today but served a utilitarian purpose; the design was achieved by welding around 200 chro-moly steel tubes together that made the vehicle lighter while also supporting the high-stress areas in the chassis. Despite a promising yet troublesome Le Mans racing history, the vehicle pushed the boundaries of race car engineering and paved the way for future endeavors.
Spyderco Edgerati Basics
Just like the Tipo 60/61, the Spyderco Edgerati features the “birdcage” design on the handle, machined here from hardcoat-anodized solid aircraft-grade aluminum that imbues strength into the lightweight material and gives it a non-slip texture. Weighing just 3.3oz in total, the knife also gets a Compression Lock mechanism, nesting a stainless steel lock bar into a machined pocket on the obverse side.
Under the aegis of Spyderco co-founder Sal Glesser based on his love of high-performance sports cars, the made-in-the-USA Edgerati has an inherently skeletonized design that allows you to see its insides in a very unique fashion. When folded, you can still view the CPM S30V particle metallurgy stainless steel blade, a straight-spined, full-flat-ground piece that stretches 3.57” in length with a 0.145-inch thickness.
You can choose from either PlainEdge or SpyderEdge blade configurations and the knife comes with a reversible pocket clip. 4.7” when closed, the knife features a textured index-finger choil for improved control thanks to a forward-positioned grip.
