Back in early 2022, Leatherman announced the launch of its Garage innovation hub, which provided a workshop, the resources, and freedom needed to deliver envelop-pushing designs and limited edition knives and multi-tools. Aiming to honor the pioneering spirit that saw Tim Leatherman develop the first-ever Leatherman in his garage, the multi-tool manufacturer’s latest limited Garage Batch releases has Leatherman linking up with the Malloy Brothers in order to deliver a top-shelf limited edition fixed blade knife.
The Basics
The second knife-only release born out of the Leatherman Garage innovation hub, the Malloy Special was co-developed by Leatherman and Chris, Dan, and Keith Malloy. The knife was engineered from the ground up to be a versatile workhorse of a fixed blade, lending itself to hard-use tasks just as well as it does EDC applications.
The Material Selection
The Malloy Special’s full tang construction has been brought to life in Crucible Industries’ revolutionary CPM MagnaCut blade steel. The MagnaCut construction has been sandwiched in-between a set of off-white Micarta scales with a mirror-polished finish. The Micarta scales are also fixed to the handle using brass pins, plus feature a brass lanyard hole insert. The handle features a clean yet ergonomic profile while the blade’s spine has been bestowed with a series of notches to bolster grip and control.
The Hard Numbers
Made in America, the Malloy Special spans roughly 6.5” in length, making it big and robust enough to take on most tasks and uses while still being compact enough for everyday carry. The fixed blade sports a roughly 0.15-inch-thick full tang construction that culminates in a 2.7-inch-long drop point profile. In total, the knife tips the scales at just 3.17oz, too.
The Sheath
Rather than pairing the fixed blade with a KYDEX sheath, Leatherman has opted to outfit the Malloy Special with a top-shelf leather sheath. Decorated in a “Malloy Special” script, the sheath is cut from full-grain, vegetable-tanned leather, is oil-rubbed by hand, and features a bit paddle pocket and custom brass snap that matches the knife’s hardware.
