HOKA Taps J.L-A.L_ for a Technical Take On Its Tor Ultra Hiking Boots

We revere several brands for the high-end approach to techwear, and J.L.-A.L_ is one of many notable imprints the scene has to offer. Working alongside HOKA, the functional designer adds his unique touch of rugged, experimental chic to two of the shoemaker’s most prominent silhouettes: both the high-and-low models of the Tor Ultra.

Abbreviated after lead designer Jean Luc Ambridge Labelle, the innovative imprint is adept at churning out premium dystopian-like pieces across the board, making his signature touch immediately noticeable here. Seeing as the original Tor Ultra hiking boot already featured a waterproof GORE-TEX membrane, it’d be safe to assume there’s little to improve upon in the protection department. Still, the designer couldn’t just let it be. Both the high-and-low-top iterations are bolstered with waterproof mudguards and GORE-TEX underpinnings for maximum weather resistance.

For optimal protection across any terrain, the Tor Ultra retains HOKA’s signature Meta-Rocker tech and a lugged Vibram MegaGrip outsole for maximum traction through your next unpredictable adventure. The stompers are finished off with reflective branding to acknowledge the joint effort. Lastly, the two-piece collab is available in a pair of colorways, with the neutral “Dune” palette overtaking the low-top, and a Northern Lights-inspired “Aurora” design coats the trustier high-top version.

The J.L-A.L_ x HOKA collection will be available on the former’s webshop on January 19.
