For over a decade, James Hobson and his team have been bringing fictional tech to life — from plasma lightsabers to giant mechs — earning 15 million YouTube subscribers along the way. The Hacksmith logo itself combines a multi-tool with an anvil, so the release of its first-ever multi-tool feels like a long time coming.

Engineering Fiction Into Reality

Enter the Smith Blade, a titanium multi-tool that packs 21 functions into just 3.3oz. Built around a Grade 5 titanium frame (Ti-6Al-4V), this multi-tool boasts M390 blade steel, featuring German powder metallurgy that delivers exceptional edge retention and corrosion resistance. At 61-63 HRC hardness, this blade doubles as a nail file and has incredible cutting performance.

But the real innovation lies in the patent-pending bit retention system. Instead of bulky plier-based designs, Hacksmith integrated 4mm precision screwdriver bit storage directly into the front scale. Neodymium magnets, machined hexagon channels, and a titanium retention spring create a satisfying fidget-friendly mechanism that’s also drop-proof. The system accommodates any 4mm bits, including those from Linus Tech Tips, expanding functionality beyond the included Phillips, flathead, and even writing pen bits.

The Rest of the Pack

The 15-degree adjustable protractor emerged from pure accident when Hobson noticed the ball detent scribing perfect radial marks on the blade edge. Adding incremental divots transformed this discovery into both a useful measuring tool and the source of the Smith Blade’s signature “cliclicliclick” opening sound.

Wire strippers with guided grooves handle 12 to 20 gauge wiring, while the tungsten carbide glass breaker requires minimal force to shatter tempered glass. The ferrocerium fire striker generates sparks at 6,000°F, and there’s a bubble level as well. Even seemingly basic tools like the bottle opener and pry bar feel like they’ve been meticulously designed and not just filler.

The Smith Blade’s slim profile, which is about 5″ closed, challenges conventional multi-tool thinking. Where Leatherman and Victorinox dominate through proven designs, Hacksmith approached the category as engineering outsiders, prioritizing everyday carry over workshop utility.

Three Tiers with Different Approaches

Hacksmith is offering three different tiers for The Smith Blade to ensure it can satisfy every kind of EDC enthusiast. The Smith Blade Lite (7-in-1) uses 14C28N Swedish steel and focuses on core functionality in five anodized colors plus PVD coatings. The Standard Edition (14-in-1) adds the precision bit system that defines the platform.

Lastly, the Pro Edition delivers all 21 functions with the M390 steel. It’s also available in a limited-to-999 Founder’s Edition which is numbered and includes a tritium tube that can glow without being charged. The Founder’s Edition also features Hobson and product developer Benjamin McDonnell’s signatures inscribed on the handle.
