Everyday Carry: Flare

There was once a time in the photography industry when any and all imperfections found in an image were considered undesirable. It was largely believed that the clearer and cleaner an image, the better said image was overall and the truer the end result. Over time, however, photographers began to experiment with stylistic alterations, eventually leading many to adopt purposeful imperfections in the name of setting themselves apart and crafting more individual imagery. Now, these stylistic flourishes are almost the norm — to the point that some photographers (and cinematographers, by extension) are known for particular ones. One of the most easily recognizable examples of this is filmmaker JJ Abrams and his penchant for lens flares — an effect characterized by light scattered through a camera lens to create a kind of bleeding, blinding effect (something that occurs naturally in the human eye when looking at a bright light, especially for those with astigmatism). It’s that very effect that has inspired this week’s everyday carry loadout, which includes polished metal-accented gear for light to glint and glimmer upon.

Unimatic U3-F Chrono Diver Watch

Since Unimatic only makes limited edition watches, this one is already in short supply; in fact, only 600 were built in total. Of course, even without rarity, this would be an exceptional dive watch. It’s marked by a formidable 316 stainless steel case, an always-accurate Seiko meca-quartz movement, and the brand’s ever-stylish minimalist styling. And while most people will probably pick this up as a style piece, you can rest easy knowing it is also water-resistant to depths of up to 300m.
