Combating the longer work days of the Great Depression and the extreme demands of loggers working in the Pacific Northwest during the 1930s, Charles Danner’s original workboot didn’t just have to provide ample traction but needed to protect the feet of these mountain workers. Heading into the 21st century, the Danner brand didn’t stop perfecting the work boot, debuting the Mountain 600 in 2017 to much acclaim. Today, the silhouette comes in several iterations, with one of our favorites being the Mountain 600 ID GTX, leveling up the boot with some premium elements and PNW-tested tech.

For starters, the ID GTX swaps the leather upper for a handsome suede in Almond Butter beige. Best of all, the material also happens to be waterproof. The weather resistance is further bolstered by the GORE-TEX lining, known for also allowing your feet to breathe by letting your sweat and moisture escape. Lightweight at around 16oz per shoe and still very comfortable, the ID GTX still brings the kind of on-foot protection for the trails, especially heading into the coming months when conditions might be more unpredictable.

Underfoot, a triple-layer Ortholite memory foam footbed keeps you on your feet, while a Vibram SPE midsole offers you amazing cushioning and support thanks to a rubberied EVA foam that’s more durable than your typical EVA.
But the Mountain 600 wouldn’t be the Mountain 600 without a Vibram outsole — this time coming in the way of the Fuga pattern with Megagrip self-adapting lugs, which provides you with superb traction on both wet and dry surfaces. While these are still hiking boots, they keep a pretty low profile of 4.5” high, making the transition from the trail to the town much easier.

Priced at $240, the Danner Mountain 600 ID GTX boot is now available from Huckberry’s web store.
