Axes can be incredibly useful when camping or exploring the wilderness. However, these wedge-shaped blades aren’t often convenient for carrying. Now, with its latest release showcased at this week’s SHOT Show in Las Vegas, revered knife brand CRKT has transposed its flagship Provoke pocket knife into an axe that can fit in your pocket.

Some Backstory on the Provoke
In 2019, CRKT adopted Joe Caswell’s Kickstarter-favorite Morphing Karambit and put the Provoke into mass production. Sporting a unique design and the clever Kinematic folding and deployment system, the self-defense knife became immensely popular and has since been released in various color options and iterations, including an EDC version and, now, a pocket axe.

CRKT Provoke X Axe Basics
The Provoke is known for its ambidextrous finger hole that allows the user to deploy the knife without losing his hold on it. Still featuring the pocket knife’s idiosyncratic deployment, the Provoke X can be opened with the flick of your wrist — that is, after releasing the Deadbolt lock on the side which holds the blade in place when you’re not intending to use it. When you’re done, you can fold the axe back up by pressing down on top, which then sets the Deadbolt safety once again.

Retaining its progenitor’s D2 stainless steel, here with titanium nitride coating for an all-black aesthetic, the Provoke X features an axe blade with a spike on the opposite end for versatility. Merely 0.12” in thickness, the blade is also just 1.84” long and adds nothing to the overall length of the unit. Made from stainless steel with glass-reinforced overlays, the black handle stretches 8.69”, which is the same as the overall axe when opened.
Weighing 13.2oz in total, this won’t be the lightest item in your pocket but with axes, weight can be everything. You need a bit of gravity to supplement your swing, so we’re happy this wasn’t too lightweight.
Unlike the integrated pocket clips of the standard and EDC versions of the Provoke, the Provoke X features an adjustable pocket clip that can be swapped for either left- or right-side carry.
