“Oregon-based multi-tool company partners with French rapper” isn’t a phrase you hear all that often. It’s why the collaboration between Leatherman and rapper Orelsan’s AVNIER brand on a limited-edition version of the iconic WAVE+ made us stop and take notice.
Leatherman’s signature 18-tool WAVE+, a favorite of handymen everywhere, is now reimagined as a fashion item—a highly functional fashion item. Swapping the Wave’s standard silver stainless steel for a flat black coat (though still made from 420HC stainless steel), this new edition also sports AVNIER’s logo on the side in gray. A metal snap button and reinforced belt loop accompany the nylon storage case, and a complete locking system is in place for increased safety.
Made for quick opening and loading, the WAVE+ is a must for any technician or repairman, but this stylish new version is perfect for the stagehand or roadie looking for a more inconspicuous gadget or one to match his milieu. Weighing 8.5oz and measuring 4 inches long when closed, this latest release also possesses the same 18 tools as the original version, which includes replaceable wire cutters, a ruler, a medium screwdriver, a saw, and two sizes of bit drills.
One detail on the AVNIER x Leatherman WAVE+ that we find particularly amusing is the labeling on the multi-tool’s knife that boldly states: “SHARP BLADE.” It’s a way to have some fun in a space that can at times take itself a bit seriously. That doesn’t mean this edition of the Wave+ is a less-serious tool, though, as it boasts a 25-year warranty — the same found on the standard WAVE+.
