When it comes to watches, 50mm is quite large. Typically heavier on the wrist and with a tendency to dig into our forearms, these hefty cases are few and far between for a reason. However, when it comes to a smartwatch loaded with features, you might actually want something that doesn’t require a magnifying glass to read. To satisfy fans of its popular mid-level adventure model, Garmin has gone a lot bigger.
5mm bigger to be exact. Previously offered in 40mm and 45mm cases, the rugged Instinct 2 line has now been expanded with the addition of the 50mm version. It’s called the Instinct 2X and it features almost all of the same features as the smaller models, including health monitoring, expansive GPS systems with a breadcrumb feature, solar power monitoring, standard weather and calendar features, and a plethora of sports modes for running, biking, skiing, golf, and weightlifting, among others. There’s also a built-in LED flashlight for emergencies. Unlike the 40mm and 45mm Instinct 2 models, which have the option to ditch the solar function, the Instinct 2X only has the solar option — for now at least. According to Garmin, this gives you unlimited battery life without using GPS, but 145 hours with GPS turned on.
Previously offered in the 45mm version, there’s also a stealthy Tactical variant (for a $50 upcharge) that includes some extra features such as a killswitch option, stealth mode for going completely off-grid, and night vision mode, which allows you to look at the screen while wearing night vision goggles. Although it stretches to 50mm on your wrist, the Instinct 2X only weighs half an ounce more than the 45mm thanks to the fiber-reinforced polymer construction of its case and bezel.
Garmin easily has the best range of smartwatches in the game and this new 50mm version of one of its most legendary models is no small feat. Available in graphite, white, flame red, and moss green (the Tactical version is only available in either black or tan), the Instinct 2X Solar is priced starting at $450 from Garmin’s website.
