Everyday Carry: Coyote

Presented by

Coyote brown (or just “coyote” for short) has become a staple of both the everyday carry and tactical gear communities. And while most folks are familiar with this color for its use in desert-focused military gear, the origin can actually be traced back to the world of fashion. You see, back in 1981, Ralph Lauren — the lauded fashion label — introduced its now-legendary Santa Fe collection, which was inspired by the American Southwest and drew heavily from the history and topography of the area. Included in this collection was a series of color swatches used in the collection. As it turns out, code “SF11B” — now known colloquially as “coyote brown” — came right out of that group of swatches. Ralph Lauren couldn’t have known that this particular color would take on a life of its own, but it most certainly has — coopted by hunters, outdoorsmen, EDC fanatics, and the military alike. It also happens to be the inspiration behind this week’s everyday carry pocket dump.
