Porsche tuners have the immeasurably difficult task of making a great-performing, iconic car look and perform even better than before. While there are a few shops that manage to pull off that feat, even fewer do it with as much style, grace, and precision as RUF Automobile. The German auto manufacturer has developed a worldwide following for its incredible tuning feats. The brand was cranking out Porsche mods before it was cool, which makes us all the more excited to dive into a 1984 Porsche 911 they converted that’s now for sale.

This 1984 Porsche 911 has had a storied history, to say the least, as it’s one of the most well-known Porsche turbo builds on the internet. Known throughout the digital space as the “RUF RSR,” this M491 Carrera went from being a 3.2L 911 to becoming a RUF-converted BTR 3.4. When it was first converted, the RUF RSR wore a full steel 935 body conversion and was featured in the 1989 book “The Worlds Fastest Cars.” After shattering records, the RUF RSR was built into a 3.5L 5-speed version that ultimately suffered an engine failure before it was refurbished in 2015. The geniuses at RUF Automobile poured over $90,000 into restoring the RUF RSR in the form of a 6-speed gearbox and various performance upgrades that led the car to boast a monstrous 700HP. From there, Perfect Power (another high-end Porsche 911 tuner) took the RUF RSR and built it with a 993-based engine, bored it out to 3.8L, and integrated the RUF RSR with twin turbos, BBS E28s, 993 Big Red brakes, and fully functioning AC.

Setting the RUF RSR’s eye-popping performance specs aside, the car looks incredible. The additions of the rear spoiler, skirt, and wide air ducts on its side and rear, as well as the slant-nose Porsche 935-inspired body, create a Porsche that looks like none other. This car has a spectacular history of racing and is now in perfect condition after being refurbished by two stellar tuners. The 1984 Porsche 911 RUF RSR is for sale on Auto Source Group’s website for $280,000.
