Few watches have climbed the social ladder quite like the Vacheron Constantin Overseas. Born in 1996 as a descendant of the Jorg Hysek-penned 222, it actually spent quite a bit of time as the overlooked third wheel of the integrated sports watch world before collectors finally starting to take notice. Now the collection is turning 30, and rather than settle for a commemorative dial stamp, Vacheron is marking the occasion with a new limited edition of its Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin.
Three Generations Deep
The Overseas lineage stretches back to 1977, when Vacheron answered the quartz crisis with the 222 and its unmistakable notched bezel. The first proper Overseas landed back in 1996, the second generation brought about several complications in 2004, and the 2016 overhaul brought another slew of improvements including in-house movements, Hallmark of Geneva certification, and the tool-free strap swapping the collection is known for today.
That 2016 refresh is also where the Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin entered the lineup, and it remains the slimmest thing Vacheron builds in sports watch clothing. All of which help tee up this anniversary edition perfectly.
Flatter Than Your Dive Watch
Inside beats the caliber 1120 QP/1, a self-winding perpetual calendar measuring an incredibly thin 4.05mm. All 276 components, the 22k gold rotor with its engraved compass rose, and that Geneva Seal finishing squeeze into a white gold case standing just 8.1mm tall. The lone caveat here is that 40-hour power reserve.
A New Shade for the Occasion
The headline aesthetic change is the azure lacquered dial, which happens to be first for the collection. It’s a lighter, softer riff on the deep blue Vacheron introduced back in 2016, and it features a sunburst center, snailed counters, and sky blue accents on the minute track and leap year indicator.
Our favorite detail sits at 6 o’clock, where a white gold moon waxes and wanes across an azure sky dotted with engraved constellations. The applied markers and hands glow blue after dark, too.
And true to Overseas form, the white gold bracelet swaps out in seconds for the included white or denim blue rubber straps.
