Urwerk’s UR-150 Scorpion Is Relatively Traditional… For Urwerk

Even if you’re not familiar with Urwerk, chances are you’ve seen their watches and don’t even know it. Featuring perhaps the most outlandish watch designs in the world, the Swiss company has done more with the wandering hour complication than most other watchmakers have done with simple time telling. Now they’ve expanded their UR-100 series with a relatively “simple” model called the UR-150 Scorpion.

Relatively Traditional (Sorta)

While all of Urwerk’s wristwatches can be classified as such, they largely don’t look like a traditional timepiece, with sci-fi-inspired designs and asymmetrical cases. However, the latest UR-150 Scorpion — despite looking remarkably unorthodox — is less staggering.

Consider the rounder profile, achieved through a domed sapphire crystal and a case and dial that are actually, well, circles. Albeit, the crown is affixed to the top of the case and the dial looks nothing like a regular clock-based watch, even as far as other skeleton watches go. Instead, it employs an outer minutes track that extends all of 240º, told by a large skeleton hand, tipped in either green or red, through which the current hour can be displayed on the rotating satellite discs. Once the hand reaches 60, it and the next hour disc spring back to 0 in 1/100th of a second.

Urwerk UR-150 Scorpion Basics

Paired with a Kiska rubber strap, the Scorpion comes in two variants. The Titan has green accents while the Dark has red accents. Each variant features a titanium and stainless steel case, but the steel on the Dark is PVD-treated in black with a dial to match. A bit larger than the standard UR-100, the UR-150 Scorpion stretches 42.49mm across and 14.79mm thick, but it’s said to be a bit more ergonomic in its shape.

Also, the timepiece has a revived movement, redesigned with a new satellite complication so that the hand and hour discs work together while also helping control the speed of the retrograde action. With 43 hours of power reserve, the UR-50.01 automatic is a Vaucher-based movement and can be seen through an exhibition caseback.
