In anticipation of Geneva Watch Days this weekend, Tudor has announced a special-edition boutique exclusive of the Black Bay Chrono in an eye-catching blue dial with a matching bezel. Let’s dive into the release…

Tudor Black Bay Chrono: A Limited History

The resurgence of Tudor has been one of the most enjoyable aspects of being a watch enthusiast for the past decade. While they’ve been around since 1946, created by Rolex as a more affordable sub-brand, Tudor made some big moves in 2012 with the launch of the Heritage Black Bay and the Pelagos dive watches. Since then, both have traded off being industry darlings.

In 2021, the Swiss watchmaker made a chronograph version of the Black Bay. This is the model that’s been tapped for this boutique exclusive. (Meanwhile, there have been a couple of limited-edition chronograph versions of the Pelagos FXD.) While the Black Bay Chrono has been compared to vintage Rolex Daytonas by collectors and fans, the watch still hasn’t earned the same sort of status as its non-chronograph Black Bay brethren — that is, unless we’re talking about the somewhat viral release from earlier this year of the bright pink Chrono made in partnership with Inter Miami. Now we get another fun new release, albeit not pink, which might be a good thing for some.

Tudor Black Bay Chrono Boutique Exclusive Blue Basics

As an alternative to the panda and reverse panda versions, the Black Bay Chrono now comes in a blue colorway for the first time. With this release, the watch can finally embrace more of its own identity apart from any Rolex comparisons. Wisely, Tudor has also chosen to extend the deep blue dial color to the aluminum tachymeter bezel insert for some uniformity and indelibility. Furthermore, the bicompax chronograph layout does feature silver subdials to match the color of the case.

Like the other Black Bay Chronos, this version is housed in a 41mm stainless steel case with the same 14.4mm thickness and 200m of water resistance. Adorning the watch is a five-link steel bracelet that was first given to the Chrono on the pink version a few months back. Meanwhile, the inside hosts the standard MT 5813 automatic chronograph movement with 70 hours of power reserve. COSC-certified, this caliber is based on the Breitling B01, which in and of itself is a respectable luxury-status movement.
