With the 101st edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans kicking off this weekend, Porsche Team looks to win its first since ending its three-year run back in 2017, and its record 20th overall. Porsche is fielding a trio of 963 hypercars — hybrid vehicles with 695hp of power. In anticipation of the competition, the marque teams up with its longtime partner TAG Heuer on a new, very modern version of the Carrera chronograph.

Two Peas in a Pod
Although they’ve only been officially joined together since 2021, with a handful of tandem releases already, Porsche and TAG Heuer have had close ties for decades. A match made in heaven, the German automaker and Swiss watchmaker have been linked in our heads as well, each having its own product bearing the Carrera name, taking after the legendary Carrera Panamericana road race in Mexico.
Porsche began giving its 911 car the Carrera name in the ‘60s as a nod to its own success in the race with the 550 Coupe in the 1950s. On the other hand, Jack Heuer had a mere fascination with the competition after attending it some years prior. His own brand came out with its Carrera chronograph in 1963 and has become one of the most renowned of its type in history, and a favorite of auto enthusiasts everywhere.

TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph x Porsche 963 Basics
The latest collaborative effort between the brands comes in the form of an openworked version of the Carrera, with a look that looks decidedly contemporary rather than retro like many past releases have been, including the popular new Glassbox editions — fitting since the competing 963 hypercar is also a very modern vehicle. Housed in a 44mm stainless steel case with a black forged carbon bezel, the skeleton watch still retains the classic Carrera design language but doesn’t look remotely vintage-inspired.
If you look at the side of the case, there’s a recessed inner case colored black with PVD. The crown and pushers are also coated black. As for the lugs, they also keep the classic Carrera style, but feature a central link that connects the integrated rubber strap and looks like the race car-style NACA air inlets. There’s also some stylish Porsche branding on the sides and the bezel.
Like a standard Carrera, this version also runs on the in-house Heuer 02 automatic movement powering the triple register chronograph functions. The caliber is exposed here via the sapphire caseback. As an interesting design cue, the black rotors are shaped to look like the steering wheel on Porsche’s race car. The watch’s dial, on the other hand, has a unique skeleton design meant to evoke the car’s chassis.
