When Seiko debuted its first diver in 1965, it immediately became a favorite of North and South Pole explorers and was even made the official timepiece of the Japanese Antarctic Research team at the time. Seiko responded to the praise with a brand-new diver in 1968, which upped the water resistance from 150m to 300m and solidified the brand’s popularity amongst explorers throughout the next decade as well.
Last year, Seiko revived that black dial diver as part of the Save the Ocean series under its Prospex collection. 2023 marks the 110-year anniversary of the Japanese brand’s first wristwatch, and to celebrate, it’s unveiled a new variant inspired by polar landscapes. Dubbed the Prospex Save the Ocean Limited Edition, Ref. SPB333, the timepiece sports a case from the ‘68 original, including the unique crown at the 4 o’clock spot.
The silvery white dial is textured to evoke images of polar glaciers, while the gray bezel serves to complement both the dial and the case. Dipping the water resistance down to a more reasonable 200m, the 41mm stainless steel case houses an automatic movement that’s been updated with the Caliber 6R35, boasting 70 hours of power reserve.
Equipped with both a five-row steel clasp bracelet and a braided Seichu strap made of recycled bottles, the Seiko Watchmaking 110th Anniversary Prospex Save the Ocean is limited to just 5,000 pieces, priced at €1,350 (~$1,431).
