Anyone who’s ever tried to keep a bonsai alive knows the hobby has a way of humbling you (we know this all too well). These are trees passed down between generations and shaped over decades, and they’ll still die the moment you forget to water them over a long weekend.

So a watchmaker famous for its own brand of patience-testing dial work borrowing from that world makes perfect sense here. Enter the Seiko Presage Classic Series x Tradman’s Bonsai Limited Edition HCC009J1.

So, Who’s Tradman’s Bonsai?

Founded in Tokyo in 2015, Tradman’s Bonsai is a creative collective that produces and curates bonsai installations while collaborating with the fashion and art worlds, essentially working to make a centuries-old discipline feel current.

Now, you might expect a partner like that to gravitate toward something like the 5 Sports catalog, as this where Seiko’s wilder collabs usually live. Instead, they went straight for Presage, which happens to be the dressiest line Seiko makes. And we think this was the right choice for the collab.

Moonlight on Pine Bark

The whole watch is built around a single image, a Japanese black pine lit by the moon. The dial is finished in matsuba-iro, a traditional pine needle green long associated with good fortune, and embossed with a texture modeled on the gnarled bark of an aging black pine.

The pattern sits quiet in low light, then flares to life the second it catches an angle. The gold plays the moon here, washing over the case, indices, and those curved alpha hands.

Green, Gold, and Good for Three Days

The hardware underneath is classic Presage Classic Series. The gold PVD steel case measures 38mm across, 12.9mm tall, and 43.8mm lug-to-lug. There’s also a coin-edge bezel and an oversized fluted crown with 100m water resistance.

Inside is Seiko’s in-house 6R51 automatic, a clean no-date affair with a weekend-proof 72-hour power reserve. The seven-row gold bracelet handles daily duty, while an included black calfskin strap carries that hidden sanko-matsu pine needle embossing on its underside.
