Panerai has never been a subtle brand. It’s just not how they roll. The whole appeal of a Luminor is wrist presence, that cushion case and crown guard announcing themselves from across the room. And it usually comes with the heft to match. Strapping one on has always been a commitment. Which is what makes the newest addition to the lineup such a fun contradiction, because the new Luminor Marina PAM01707 keeps all of the visual swagger and ditches nearly all of the weight.
Carbon With a Backstory
The trick here is Carbotech, Panerai’s proprietary composite made by compressing sheets of carbon fiber with a polymer called PEEK under serious heat and pressure. The brand pegs it at 64% lighter than titanium and a ridiculous 80% lighter than steel.
Panerai debuted the stuff back in 2015 on the Submersible PAM00616, and it’s been a house specialty ever since. Now it forms the entire 44mm case, bezel, and crown-protecting bridge of the Marina, and because each block cuts differently, every case wears its own marbled grain with no two looking alike.
Dressed Like It’s 1960
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Rather than leaning futuristic, Panerai styled its most advanced material like one of its old naval-issue tool watches. The matte black sandwich dial glows through beige Super-LumiNova, mimicking decades of aged tritium.
There’s no date window, either, which purists will rightly celebrate. The small seconds at 9 o’clock stays put, a holdover from the days when Italian Navy commandos needed a quick glance to confirm the watch was still ticking. A brown calf strap with beige stitching completes the vintage costume, with a black rubber strap included for actual water duty.
Three Days, 300 Meters, 100 Grams
Inside beats the P.9010, Panerai’s workhorse automatic with twin barrels good for a three-day power reserve and an independently adjustable hour hand for hopping time zones. The DLC-coated titanium caseback keeps things sealed to a properly dive-ready 300 meters, with every single watch pressure-tested 25% beyond its rating.
And the headline stat we’ve been building toward? The whole thing weighs roughly 100 grams. That’s about half the phone in your pocket, on a 44mm dive watch.
