The case-size recession has been coming for everyone, but admittedly, it felt like Panerai might end up being the last brand standing when all was said and done. Let’s not forget, this is the company that built its entire identity on watches the size of coasters, but coasters that were worn proudly by people with forearms to match.
Now, 33 years after selling its first watch to a civilian, the Florentine dive icon is meeting the moment. The result is the new Luminor 42mm, arriving in PAM01710, PAM01711, and PAM01714 flavors.
A Downsized Dose of 1993
Let’s briefly rewind to September 10, 1993, when Panerai, after decades of supplying the Italian Navy exclusively, debuted the Luminor Ref. 5218-201/A aboard the destroyer Durand de la Penne. That sharp-edged case, with its solid lugs and signature crown-guard bridge, measured in at 44mm (which was itself slimmed from the 47mm military originals).
And in the three decades since, that angular ’90s silhouette has never once been built at 42mm. Until now, that is.
The Paneristi Will Have Notes
The trio splits into a matte black dial on steel (PAM01710), a matte green take (PAM01711), and a navy dial in black DLC (PAM01714), each on a color-matched, leather-reinforced canvas strap. Purists should note there is no sandwich dial here.
Panerai decided to print the numerals instead and piled the Super-LumiNova on top. Which, to be clear, is exactly like those first civilian pieces.
Small Watch, Stupid Deep
Inside sits the P.980 automatic with a three-day power reserve and hacking seconds, hidden behind a closed caseback. Panerai never shies away from the ocean exploration, and this reference is no different. The watch packs an impressive 500 meter water resistance, with each watch being pressure-tested 25 percent beyond that rating in Neuchâtel.
