We’ve seen plenty of watch brands slap an aircraft name on a dial and call it heritage. But, the P-38 is different because it actually backs it up. Lockheed’s twin-boom fighter carried America’s two highest-scoring aces of WWII, and the Luftwaffe pilots on the wrong end of it took to calling it the fork-tailed devil.
Luminox has held the official Lockheed Martin license for years, and its aviation lineup just got a glow-up (literally, but we’ll get to that later) with the reborn P-38 Lightning 9520 Series.
The Devil Wears IP Black
The original 9520 GMT wore brushed steel, and this revival mixes things up a bit. Luminox opted for an IP black 316L case, crown, and screw-in caseback, the last of which carries an engraving of the P-38 itself alongside the Lockheed Martin logo.
There are three separate dials that make up the new drop. Open Skies Blue pairs a deep navy face with red accents, Sandstorm goes tan-on-black like a desert warbird, and Black Stealth is exactly what it sounds like. All three sport a newly shortened minute track and the classic B-Uhr triangle-and-dots at 12 for instant orientation.
Cleared for Night Flying
Now, let’s talk about that aforementioned glow. Rather than utilizing light-charged lume, Luminox equipped this watch with self-powered tritium tubes. The setup includes green across the hours with orange reserved for the 12 marker and the hands, and all of which will burn continuously for up to 25 years. There’s no charging or button pressing required, and you’ll never have to worry about a dead dial in the middle of the night again.
Inside, a Swiss Ronda 515.24H quartz caliber runs five years per battery and drives a second time zone read off the inner 24-hour ring. An anti-reflective sapphire crystal, screw-down crown, and 100 meters of water resistance round out the mission brief. And at just 80 grams, this 42mm pilot’s watch is actually pretty nicely sized for daily wear across most wrist sizes.
