In 1989, Citizen proved its commitment to building purpose-built tool watches with the debut of its Promaster lineup, featuring timepieces equipped for either air, land, or sea. But it wasn’t until 1999 that the Promaster Tough entered the fray. Designed as a rugged field watch favoring legibility and durability, this model gained even more recognition after being worn by British survivalist and TV host Ray Mears. Fans loved it because it wasn’t too flashy yet could take a serious beating out in the wilderness. Now, online retail curation experts Huckberry have collaborated with Citizen to put their own spin on the Promaster Tough, which is available now exclusively through their website.

What makes the Huckberry version so unique is how the company didn’t aim to reinvent a classic. Instead, they put subtle touches that reflect their own stylistic proclivities without disrupting the overall ethos. For starters, the dial is given a custom forest green color, perhaps a nod to the brand’s iconic tree logo (which is engraved on the caseback here as well). But fans of the standard Promaster Tough will notice the design of the hour markers has changed. Instead of being filled with white, these markings — from the numerals to the cardinal positions — are open instead. Visible under the curved sapphire crystal, the outlined appearance brings more fluidity between the dial color itself and the numerals, which now show that same green on the inside.

As for the rest of the watch’s specs, Huckberry has chosen not to tamper. Housed in the same 41.5mm case made of Citizen’s lightweight and scratch-resistant Super Titanium (which was added to the line back in 2023), the exclusive edition still gives you 200m of water resistance and is powered by the same Eco-Drive movement, which is Citizen’s in-house solar caliber that can be powered up by literally any light source. It operates the three-hand function, as well as the small date window at the 3 (also unchanged). Around the wrist, you’ll get the same matching Super Titanium 3-link bracelet with the safety fold-over clasp.
