H. Moser Built a Quartz Fiber Watch That You Inflate Like a Reebok Pump Sneaker

As Reebok pushed itself back into the basketball shoe conversation last year with the release of its Engine A, we were reminded of just how nostalgic its retro sneakers made us feel. While Shawn Kemp donned the Kamikaze and Shaq had his namesake Shaqnosis, it was the Pump lineup that had middle school kids in the ’90s bargaining with their parents for a pair. Debuting in the ’80s, these shoes had a built-in inflatable bladder, or “Pump,” that let wearers customize the fit around the tongue and ankle.

The Pump made a big return a couple years back as Reebok started rolling out a slew of reissues, and in loads of new and old colorways. And while the jury’s still out as to how effective the Pump was in improving your comfort, watchmaker H. Moser found a new way to keep your fingers busy between free throws.

A Very Rare Idea

If there’s one brand in high horology that could pull off a sneaker collab without anyone rolling their eyes, it’s H. Moser & Cie. Since its revival under the Meylan family, the Le Locle-based manufacture has built a reputation for poking fun at watch industry conventions (e.g., logo-free dials, fumé everything, a watch made of cheese) while quietly producing some of the most technically refined movements out there. The Streamliner, its cushion-cased integrated-bracelet sport watch that debuted in 2020, was already a credible challenger to flagships from other luxury brands. But I don’t think anyone saw a Reebok collab coming.

Pump You Up

Instead of a traditional crown, the new Streamliner Pump has an anodized orange aluminum pusher with Reebok Pump branding at 8 o’clock, the same position you’d find the inflation button on the tongue of a Pump sneaker. Each press of that pusher winds the movement, adding just over an hour of power reserve per pump. An orange disc indicator on the dial tracks your progress in real time. Fully wind the watch at 74 hours and, per Moser, you’re welcome to keep pressing it just because it feels good.

To accommodate the mechanism, Moser completely re-engineered the automatic HMC 500 small-seconds caliber into a manual-wind-only movement, designating it the HMC 103. The partially skeletonized bridges give you a view of the rack and winding components through the sapphire caseback. The 131-component, 31-jewel movement runs at 21,600 vph with an original Straumann hairspring, finished in anthracite with Moser’s characteristic double stripes.

The Case for Quartz Fiber

At 40mm wide and just 11.4mm thick (9.7mm without crystal), the Streamliner Pump wears its sportiness in the forged quartz fiber case material. It’s more UV-stable and more colorable than carbon fiber, and processed through a mold-and-cure cycle that produces a subtle moiré pattern. Essentially, no two cases are identical. Inside sits a titanium “sarcophagus” inner case that shields the movement and provides the backbone for both 100m water resistance and the integrated rubber strap.

The dial is appropriately minimal if you know Moser, with either polished black or polished white lacquer, a transparent-lacquer logo at 12, applied indices, and Globolight lume inserts that go green in the dark.

Recap

H. Moser x Reebok Streamliner Pump Watch

H. Moser & Cie. teamed up with Reebok to build a watch around the iconic Pump sneaker’s inflation mechanism. The Streamliner Pump is a forged quartz fiber sport watch you wind by pressing an orange button, just like the shoe.
