Girard-Perregaux’s Casquette 2.0 Is a Reimagined Blast from the Past

Girard-Perregaux has been making luxury watches since the late 1700s. The Swiss watchmaker has developed a well-earned reputation for its timeless style, opulent design, and premium quality. With that said, the luxury brand is also no stranger to taking the occasional creative risk. In this case, Girard-Perregaux leveraged the current surge in popularity for vintage-inspired watches and channeled it in a digital fashion for its latest release, the Casquette 2.0.

GP produced the original Casquette from 1976 to 1978. Despite its short production window, the watch was well-received, having 8,200 pieces produced. Even though the innovative quartz watch was popular, it wasn’t until well after its production ended that its worth and popularity soared. Now, almost 50 years after the release of the original Casquette, GP has rereleased its successor. The Casquette 2.0 retains the design language of its retro predecessor, sporting a boxy case and digital display featuring red tubular LED numbers.

Though the Casquette 2.0’s design language is relatively unchanged, GP decided to change its case material to a scratch-resistant ceramic and Grade 5 titanium construction; upping its luxury quotient considerably. This durable combination of construction materials yields a lightweight watch that’s only 107g and is hypoallergenic. Powering this futuristic device is Girard-Perregaux’s in-house quartz Calibre GP3980, which shows the time, day, date, month, year, chronograph, second timezone, and a secret date that’s special to the user like an anniversary.

The stunning timepiece also features a flexible and shingled ceramic bracelet with a rubber interior for enhanced comfort. Other features include a titanium case back, a water resistance of 50m, and a titanium folding clasp. Girard-Perregaux’s Casquette 2.0 retails for $4,700 at the Maison’s website and at select authorized dealers.
