Sony’s Purpose-Built PlayStation Monitor Can Charge Your Controller When Not in Use

When you boil it down, the main thing that long separated PC gamers from console gamers was the monitor. When you played on your Wii or PS3, you likely sat on your couch across the room from your TV set. However, in recent years, the line has been significantly blurred, to the point of non-existence. Customizable setups have made it possible to game on your 32-inch 4K monitor.

Sony understands this, which is why it’s been making gaming monitors specifically for its consoles ever since the PlayStation 3D Display in 2011. Now it’s done so again for the PS5, teasing us with what could finally give PlayStation gamers a proper desktop setup.

Back to Basics

The new 27-inch PlayStation Gaming Monitor isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel but simply refining it. Sony Interactive Entertainment has built this around a 27-inch QHD IPS panel running at 2560 x 1440, which hits that sweet spot for desktop gaming. You’re close enough to appreciate the detail without needing to crane your neck like you would with a massive 4K display.

In terms of refresh rate, it depends on what you’re plugging in. When you connect your PS5 or PS5 Pro, you’re capped at 120Hz, which is all those consoles can push anyway. But hook up a PC or Mac through the DisplayPort 1.4 input and you unlock the full 240Hz potential.

HDR support comes standard, with Auto HDR Tone Mapping that configures itself during PS5 setup, while variable refresh rate keeps everything smooth. The panel itself is positioned for personal space gaming, so it won’t be something you’ll want in a living room, but rather a bedroom or office.

The Hook

Sony added some thoughtful features to truly hone in the PS5 theming. There’s a rear-mounted charging hook that you can flip down to give you a dedicated spot for your DualSense or DualSense Edge controller. Moreover, the hook charges the controller while it’s holding it.

This follows Sony’s broader push into desktop gaming peripherals, particularly after announcing the Pulse Elevate wireless speakers back in September. Both products were designed to work together, creating a cohesive PS5 desktop experience that doesn’t rely on your television.

The INZONE Legacy

Sony’s gaming monitor history has been spotty at best. The PlayStation 3D Display from 2011 (14 years ago!) had its moment with SimulView technology, but it never caught on. For years afterward, Sony focused on optimizing their Bravia TVs for PlayStation rather than building dedicated monitors.

That changed in 2022 with the INZONE line. The M9 and M3 models targeted serious gamers with HDMI 2.1 support and high refresh rates. This new PlayStation-branded monitor feels like a spiritual successor to that 2011 display, but with lessons learned from the INZONE series baked in.

Connectivity & Flexibility

Beyond the basics, Sony packed in practical connectivity for the new monitor. Two HDMI 2.1 ports and one DisplayPort 1.4 input mean you can run multiple devices simultaneously. There are also three USB ports (two Type-A, one Type-C) for PlayStation Link adapters or other peripherals, plus built-in stereo speakers and a 3.5mm audio jack for those who prefer wired headphones. VESA mounting compatibility gives you flexibility for arm setups, though the built-in stand should handle most desktop configurations.

Pricing & Availability

Sony’s holding pricing close to the vest for now, with the monitor slated to arrive sometime in 2026 exclusively in the U.S. and Japan. Given the INZONE M3 launched around $530 and this sits below that in specs, expect something in the mid-tier range—probably competitive with other 1440p 240Hz displays but with that PlayStation integration premium.
