Although cell phones were invented to give us the ability to communicate anywhere we go, these devices have certainly turned into something much more, from high-end photography tools to pocket-sized computers. But even before the first camera was ever affixed to its housing, your phone’s primary bonus feature was indeed the games it came with.

From Snake to Tetris, mobile games predate the smartphone by almost a decade, and have still evolved considerably. But now, a company in Japan has found a way to merge the worlds of handheld gaming consoles and your smartphone in a pretty unique way.

Gaming Your Downtime

Oscar Japan Inc. has introduced the Mobile BOY, a portable power bank that doubles as a fully functional retro gaming console, giving you something to do while you wait for your dead phone to charge. Built into the back of this 5,000mAh MagSafe-compatible battery is a complete gaming system loaded with 300 retro titles that don’t require WiFi or any internet connection.

While the name blatantly cribs from the Nintendo Game Boy, its layout mirrors classic handheld consoles from the ’80s and ’90s, with directional buttons on the left and command controls on the right. There’s a small display screen and the rounded edges make it feel more like a power bank than a gaming device when you’re not actively playing. The whole setup weighs less than 4oz in total.

A Nod to Handheld Gaming’s Past

This isn’t Oscar Japan’s first rodeo with nostalgic tech, but the Mobile BOY taps into something that goes back to Gunpei Yokoi’s Game & Watch series from 1980 or the original Game Boy. Those devices thrived on portability and battery efficiency, two qualities the Mobile BOY inherits. While modern (and large) handhelds like the Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck push performance boundaries, the space still has room for something that fits in your pocket and doesn’t need a charger itself every few hours.

Still a Solid Charger

Beyond gaming, the Mobile BOY functions as a legitimate charging solution. The 5,000mAh capacity handles most modern smartphones for a single full charge, and it works with any device that supports wireless charging. For those without MagSafe compatibility, you can still use the console portion independently. There’s a wrist strap attachment on the upper right side for secure handling, and two small speakers deliver audio for gaming.

A tiny screen on the bottom left displays battery percentage, and when the power bank itself needs juice, it charges via USB-C. Oscar Japan offers the device in three colors: silver, pink, and black, each with a black display background that keeps the screen clear and easy to read.
