In early 2020 — nearly 60-years-after its inception — Marshall introduced its first-ever pair of wireless noise-canceling headphones with the Monitor II A.N.C. The over-ear ANC space moves quickly, however, and after only a few years, the second-gen Monitor A.N.C. started looking a little long in the tooth. In a bid to remain competitive, Marshall’s UK-based team has returned to the drawing board in order to deliver its latest generation of its flagship over-ear active noise-canceling headphones, ultimately giving way to the new and massively improved Marshall Monitor III A.N.C. Wireless Headphones.
Materials & Design
Weighing in at under 9oz, the third-gen Monitor A.N.C. boasts an over-ear setup with folding ear-cups. Sporting an unmistakably retro-inspired design, the Monitor III A.N.C. comes trimmed in the British brand’s signature (vegan) pebbled leather and features its hallmark gold badges and trim. As far as construction goes, 66% of the plastic used to make the Monitor III A.N.C. is derived from up-cycled plastic from old electronics and compact discs while the remaining 34% consists of GRS-certified post-consumer recycled plastic. In order to ensure these premium ANC headphones offer years of dependable use, Marshall has designed the Monitor III A.N.C. so that it can be repaired or serviced by authorized dealers, plus the brand is selling spare parts for the gen-three Monitor A.N.C., making them even easier to maintain.
Control Setup & Shortcuts
Though this new pair doesn’t offer voice control capabilities, it does have a multi-directional control knob that can be used to pause and resume playback, adjust volume, receive or reject calls, activate Bluetooth pairing, and turn the headphones on and off. What’s more, there’s also a new customizable M-Button that can be programed to perform functions such as switching between different EQ settings or opening/launching Spotify.
Onboard Drivers
The Monitor III A.N.C. features a custom-tuned set of 32mm dynamic drivers. In terms of hard numbers, these drivers off a sensitivity of 117-dB, an impedance of 35 Ω, and a frequency range of 20 – 20,000-Hz. In layman’s terms, the drivers — while smaller than the 40mm on the gen-two Monitor A.N.C. — still deliver Marshall’s iconic signature dynamic, crunchy, and punchy sound.
Onboard Tech
Though they have a decidedly retro-inspired appearance, the Monitor III A.N.C. comes loaded with a host of thoroughly modern features and tech. This includes a transparency mode, as well as a new “Soundstage” spatial audio tech that emits sound by virtually moving it out of the user’s head and into a virtual room, thereby affording a markedly more immersive listening experience. It doesn’t end there, however, as they also boast Dynamic Loudness, which automatically adjusts the headphone’s treble, mids, and bass in order to optimize sound at all times. There’s also an Adaptive Loudness feature that automatically tweaks the headphone’s sound in order to generate consistent-sounding volume regardless of how quiet or loud the user’s surroundings or environment.
Connectivity
Marshall’s latest headphones come outfitted with Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity, as well as compatibility with the Marshall Bluetooth App. Affording a range of 100’ (or 30 meters), the Monitor III A.N.C. also supports multi-point connectivity — meaning they can be paired with two devices at once simultaneously (such as a smartphone and a laptop). I also love how the audio prompts on the Monitor III A.N.C to let you know they’re turned on or paired consists of a distorted guitar riff and an amp feedback noise — rather than playing a tone, melody, or saying “On.” This gives the headphones a more classic rock-and-roll feel that very much jives with their outward appearance.
Battery Specs
The Monitor III A.N.C. draws from an onboard battery that delivers a generous 70 hours of playback time with active noise cancelation activated — or 100 hours of life without ANC turned on. This not only means they seldom need to be charged, but it also makes the Monitor III A.N.C. a great pair of travel headphones. What’s more, in addition to having the ability to receive a complete recharge in as little as 2.5 hours, Marshall’s latest flagship ANC headphones can also gain an additional 12 hours of playtime after being plugged in for just 15 minutes. Unfortunately, these headphones don’t support wireless charging.
