Not only do they have unequivocally the most impressive range of adventure-themed smartwatches on the planet, but Garmin has been seriously enhancing our ability to stay safe off-grid with its inReach system. Growing significantly since the brand first acquired DeLorme’s satellite communication tech in 2016, inReach has since evolved to feature broader GPS coverage, weather updates, and even standalone capability without the need of a smartphone.
Today, Garmin has debuted the third-gen inReach Mini, bringing with it some much-welcomed additions.

From Pager to Powerhouse
Back when DeLorme launched the first inReach device in 2011, it was revolutionary — the world’s first personal satellite communicator with two-way text messaging. Garmin’s takeover a few years later accelerated the tech considerably, and the subsequent inReach SE+, Explorer+, and Mini models carved out a legitimate niche for backcountry safety. The Mini 2 became the go-to for backpackers and minimalists who didn’t want to lug around anything bulky. But it was also starting to feel dated, especially compared to what cell phones could do.
The Mini 3 Plus changes that entirely. Where previous iterations felt closer to souped-up pagers, this new model brings legitimate smartphone-adjacent communication to the Iridium satellite network. The built-in speaker and microphone handle 30-second voice messages, while the new color touchscreen lets you type out texts up to 1,600 characters directly on the device. Pair it with the Garmin Messenger app, and you can send photos too, which feels like a huge leap for a device this compact.

The Touchscreen Makes All the Difference
If you ever tried to fat-thumb a message on earlier Mini models, you’re well aware that the button interface wasn’t the easiest to use. The new 1.9-inch color touchscreen fixes this entirely, bringing a more intuitive type of navigation. You can read transcribed voice messages on-screen, view photos sent by contacts, and actually enjoy using the thing instead of fighting with it.
Battery life remains strong at 350 hours in 10-minute tracking mode, while the IP67 water rating and impact-resistant build ensure it can handle any sort of excursion you take it on. Likewise, the compact device can easily clip onto a pack or vest.

Two Versions, One Clear Choice
Garmin’s offering the Mini 3 in two configurations. The standard Mini 3 keeps the touchscreen and core messaging but drops voice and photo capabilities. But for $50 more, the Mini 3 Plus gives you everything. Both versions maintain the SOS button that connects to Garmin Response, the 24/7 coordination center that can actually deploy search and rescue, giving you interactive communication with people who can get you out of trouble.
