If you’ve got a box of Super Nintendo cartridges collecting dust because dragging out a CRT feels like too much effort, Epilogue’s SN Operator might be the bridge you didn’t know you needed. It’s essentially a USB-C cartridge slot that lets you pop in SNES or Super Famicom carts and play them on your PC, Mac, or even Steam Deck – no rewiring your living room required.

The Physical Game Ritual, Digitized
The SN Operator isn’t trying to be a flashy all-in-one emulation box. It’s a transparent polycarbonate dock with one job: reading your original cartridges and getting them running on modern hardware. Epilogue includes their Playback app, which bundles an emulator so you don’t have to hunt one down, though you’re free to use RetroArch or whatever you prefer. What makes this interesting is that you’re still inserting a physical cart which helps keep that tactile ritual alive while also still getting modern conveniences like fast-forward, soft reset, and RetroAchievements integration layered on top.

Preservation Meets Portability
The SN Operator backs up your game data and save files in a couple clicks, archiving them before those 30-year-old backup batteries finally give up. Saves sync between your PC and whatever handheld you’re using, so you can start Chrono Trigger on your desk and pick it up on the couch with a Steam Deck without juggling files.
It also handles accessories you probably don’t have anymore. Games that used the Super Scope or SNES Mouse now just use your computer’s mouse instead. So Mario Paint and Battle Clash are back in play without hunting down obscure peripherals.

Spotting the Fakes
There’s also a standout feature for collectors: counterfeit detection. As vintage game prices have climbed, bootlegs have gotten more convincing. The SN Operator analyzes cartridge data to flag suspicious boards, giving you a hardware-based authentication tool when you’re dropping serious cash at a flea market or online. It’s certainly not foolproof, but it is better than just eyeballing the shell.
Built for the Long Haul
Epilogue didn’t skimp on the engineering. The device includes overcurrent protection and ESD resistance to keep decades-old cartridges safe during reads. Custom dust flaps keep debris out of the slot, and the transparent design (very much a ’90s callback) shows off the PCB underneath. It works with all SNES enhancement chips (Super FX, SA-1, DSP, CX4) and is region-free, so your import collection is covered.
